3D localisation of nanoparticles in whole cells using correlative cryo soft x-ray tomography and fluorescent microscopy

August 27, 2024

Dr Kenneth Fahy, SiriusXT, gave an insightful talk today at European Microscopy Congress 2024 (emc2024) in Denmark, delving into the role nanoparticles play in modern medicine, in both diagnosing and treating diseases.

Nanoparticles have emerged as important players in modern medicine, with wide ranging clinical applications from contrast agents in imaging to carriers for drug and gene delivery into tumors.

Soft X-ray Microscopy is capable of imaging the whole structure of intact biological cells, thus it can be used to assess both the efficiency and the effect of nanoparticle delivery as it can answer a plethora of questions, such as; does the nanoparticle reach the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells where it might exert therapeutic effects on intracellular molecules, what subcellular compartments does the nanoparticle enter following delivery to cells, or does nanoparticle uptake influence cell structure?
